time to go
Last night I was physically threatened at my place of work by a guy who was completely strung out on drugs.
Me. The dude with a broken arm. He had his fists cocked and ready when someone else intervened.
I don't get paid enough for this. What else is out there, I wonder...

How about two big brothers only a phone call away, who have no qualms about tilting the playing field in your favor?

Maybe it is time for some martial arts classes--You and Jerry are the only ones who haven't had the training. Even Sayre can flatten an assailant---not a bad skill to have, and a good defense against the crazies of this world. Of course, you will have to wait until your arm is healed, but then you might give it some serious thought. You will feel more secure if you can "take" anyone who attacks you. That doesn't make you a bully. There is a certain confidence that comes from being able to defend yourself--just ask your brothers and your sister.

Actually, I *did* take some martial arts -- remember that phys. ed. requirement I missed and made up for with dual enrollment at FSU? I took a self-defense course. I still feel confident with them, the concern was the fact that the arm is still broken... there's not a lot that I could have done.
Well, then you are very lucky that there was someone else on hand to intervene. But that doesn't mean that you need to quit your job and find something else. This could have happened ANYWHERE. ANYTIME. It's the price of living in this day and time. It is also why I wanted Z-boy to be able to take care of himself (bullies at school). Then I realized that I would feel better if I knew what to do too.
A martial arts class back when you were in school is good ground work, but I would highly recommend that once you've healed up, you do it again. If you don't practice on a regular basis, you will lose whatever competence you had. Go back to class - and don't quit your job!
Some chump on steroids, sounds like. You were smart to let somebody else step in. This twerp must feel like a real he man, able to threaten a guy with screws and pins in his arm.
Meanwhile, for your own self-assurance sake, a martial arts course is excellent exercise and gives you, along with your 6'4", 220 lb self, rather a edge. But next time, if he swings, pick up a barbell and hit him with it ..a 10 lb ought to do it. Dad
A concept I have tried to get across to my children is that self defense is not a class, but a mindset. I have studied martial arts for nearly 30 years, and in that time have had to legitimately use what I have learned about three times. It is, however, worth it to me to feel confident in any physical encounter. That confidence, more often that not, ends any confrontation before it begins.

Bingo! The self-confidence is absolutely priceless. Whether or not you ever actually use the stuff. Just the way you carry yourself is enough to make a bully/thug/threat think twice. Of course, strung-out-on-drugs people aren't thinking, but the self-preservation mindset doesn't really ever go away... and makes even those people think twice.
