just a part

My mantra this morning is "it's just part of the job. it'll be worth it soon. it's just part of the job."

But, seriously, can you blame me for not wanting to go to work at 5am on short notice and no sleep after doing a 14 hour day yesterday?

It is part of the job. More times than you know I have worked a 20 hour day, slept four hours and done it again. That is the reality of the business I was in. You were too little to realize what I was doing and later too self-absorbed to care.
There is no perfect world with neat 8-5 and weekends off. If you are a manager, remember that schedule is for the managed, not the manager.
The myth is that managers don't work, that they goof off all the time. Reality is that nobody works harder, puts in longer hours and gets less appreciation for it than a good manager. Crappy ones goof off etc. But crappy ones get fired and crappy ones never move up, never make more money or enjoy the satisfaction of watching the enterprise running like a Swiss watch...you get the point.
Think of your brother during Katrina--20 hour days for weeks on end. No extra pay, no applause..just a job that has to be done and you do it.
Welcome to the world. Get used to it. It's a lot like life, if you want to be a manager.
Of course, if you prefer being a drudge, with no responsibility, no say-so and no job satisfaction, join the assembly line, put in your 8-5 and find out what layoffs look like when things slow down.

Maybe a little meaner than necessary, but the old man is on point. Those who make a positive difference in the workplace (and the world, for that matter) don't work by the clock. When the job must be done, it is done.

That sounds just like Darling Man's weekend. Got up, drove to Jax at 6am, worked, drove home and crawled into bed at 2am, got up and went to work at 6am and worked until 5pm. He came in and waved as he crawled upstairs to bed.

Sometimes it's just like that.
